Tiger Woods will adds Frys.com in October
It turns out Tiger Woods wasn’t just paying lip service to the idea of needing more competition to sharpen his new golf swing. Golf’s top draw announced Monday that he’ll return to Wholesale golf clubs the West Coast for the Frys.com Open. The Fall Series event will be played Oct. 6-9 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif., about 40 minutes south of his Stanford alma mater.
Woods has played just eight USPGA Tour events this year partly because of injuries to his left knee and Achilles’ tendon.Woods has never played the Tour’s fall with Wholesale Golf Equipment series events but a couple of weeks ago he was urged by American Presidents Cup team captain Fred Couples to play more tournaments. Couples announced last week that Woods would be included on the American squad.
Woods failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship earlier this month and also failed to make it into the FedEx Cup playoffs. The PGA Championship was just Woods’ second tournament in eight weeks.
Woods, who has played every Presidents Cup since he first became eligible in 1998, has already said he would play the Australian Open and the one day Notah Begay charity event in New York on Wednesday.
Barring another addition, it will end a seven-week layoff since Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship with R11 Driver. He also fell short of getting into the FedEx Cup “playoff” series, keeping him out of the current four-event stretch to crown a season champion.
Injuries to his left knee and Achilles tendon have limited Woods to just eight starts in 2011, taking three months off after an early exit from The Players Championship when he withdrew after just nine holes.
Woods has not played later than Oct. 1 on the PGA Tour since 2005, when he missed the cut at the Disney stop and then finished second at the Tour Championship.
