Troy Matteson leads PGA Tour event
The Deutsche Bank Championship began Friday with two players on opposite ends of the world ranking — Luke Donald at No. 1, Cheap Golf Clubs Troy Matteson at No. 207 — having their lowest first rounds of the year on the PGA Tour.
Matteson overcame a bogey on the first hole for Wholesale Golf Equipment a 6-under-par 65 and the outright lead after the first round of the second tournament in the four-event FedEx Cup playoffs. Donald shot a 66 to tie for second with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, Y.E. Yang and Jerry Kelly.
Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor and PGA Championship with Ping K15 Irons winner Keegan Bradley were among 14 players tied for 13th place at 68.
Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson (70) brought attention to himself for two items that looked out of place.
One day after he took batting practice at Fenway Park and wore a Red Sox jersey while throwing out the first pitch before the New York Yankees’ 4-2 victory, Mickelson wore pinstripes at the TPC Boston.
“Lost a wager with a friend and had to wear these today,” Mickelson said. “What can you say? I’ve got to suck it up and bear it.”
Stranger yet was the sight of Mickelson sticking the grip of Burner 2.0 Irons for sale a long putter into his midsection.
Mickelson became the latest PGA Tour player to try a belly putter. Although he still missed his share of putts, he sounded as if he was willing to stick with it — at least for this tournament.
