The Pre-Shot Plan - Turn It to Your Advantage

Those few seconds between the time you tee up the golf ball, or approach the ball on the fairway, and actually hit it will most likely determine how successful the shot is going to be. Will that be a time when those mind games creep in, causing you to lose focus? By utilizing your pre-shot plan that is tailored to you, there will only be time for you to concentrate on the job at hand. So why does every good golfer have an effective pre-shot plan? Because it works!

Essentially, your pre-shot plan is really a series of checkpoints, thoughts, movements, and attention to particulars just before hitting a golf shot. It should be exclusive to every golfer, and it's also best when it fits the golfer's personality. To put it differently, when a golfer throughout his daily routine moves through life in warp-speed, he'd not utilize a slow, methodical routine. Similarly, if you are a more deliberate person, that slower routine would fit you better.

So what would your pre-shot plan look like? Since I can only stress how important it is and what components go into it, I can't explain to you what is perfect for you. Therefore I will describe what I do before every shot, and maybe you may draw some ideas.

1.Previous to choosing a club, I stand behind the ball and picture the shot. That doesn't mean only distance. I take into account wind direction and strength, the way the ball is carrying on that day, how I have been previously striking the ball, and I leave a margin for error away from problem areas.

2.Choose a club. Even though I had already pre-decided my golf club prior to visualizing my shot, I always carry a couple, and occasionally three, additional clubs with me. If I change my mind after choosing the proper shot, endeavoring to hit that shot using a club I am uncomfortable with will in all probability end up poorly. That's exactly why I always prefer to walk the course if possible; all of your tools are always there with you.

3.Choose your target. I actually do this from behind the ball, then I align a spot about five feet on line and in front of the golf ball. That's where I will set my stance and my clubface to. I've discovered through practice that this provides me with a more consistent set-up to my target.

4.Prior to setting my feet, I fix the club on the exact place I would like it to hit the ball. I know that in case something mechanical fails with my swing, much can be corrected with a proper ball strike. I then set my front foot to the ball, then my back foot.

5.Then after one last glance at the target, to trigger the swing (I believe this is important) I slightly press the hands forward prior to drawing the club into the backswing. This "trigger" provides a consistent starting place to begin the swing.

As I said before, your pre-shot plan is personal, so you must work out what fits best for you. But to play your most consistent golf, you must address this very important aspect of golf.

Couples wins first senior major

Fred Couples made a three-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole of a playoff to win the Senior Players Championship and claim his first senior major title.

"I knew when it was going, it was a really good shot," Couples said after beating fellow American John Cook in the final senior major of the year.

"I didn't think it was going to be short and trickle down the hill. I just felt like it was going to be right there. It was simple yardage - 76 yards - and it hit soft. That extra rain certainly helped that shot, but I knew it was going to be close."

Couples closed with an even-par 71 on Sunday to match Cook (70) at 11-under on the Westchester Country Club's West Course.

Australia's Peter Senior (71) was a shot back in third at 10 under and Tom Lehman (68) was fourth at 9 under, a stroke ahead of 2010 winner Mark O'Meara (69).

First-round leader Jeff Sluman (70) slipped into a five-way tie for sixth.

In winning on Sunday, Couples, 51, the 1992 Masters champion, was able to claim his first title of the this season after winning four times last year in his first season on the 50-and-over tour.

His victory followed 'non-traditional' treatment for a long-standing back problem six weeks ago in Germany, and had to be achieved in a stiff wind and with a painful left hip that began giving him trouble during the near two-hour rain delay.

Miyazato shares Canadian lead

The two front runners both shot 7-under 65s at the Hillsdale Golf & Country Club outside Montreal and will take a one shot lead into the third round over little-known Canadian Samantha Richdale, who birdied her final hole to secure sole third place after a 6-under 66.

About Golfing Zen: This is the third in a continuing series of short essays dealing with the application of Eastern spiritual philosophy to your golf game.

The surface intent is that, as you apply the ideas, your golf and your enjoyment of the game will grow. However there is also an underlying motive: as you are able to see gains on the course, you'll then be moved to alter your approach to life as well.

Today's Topic: You Already Know

The fundamental objective of Eastern spiritualism is enlightenment," a complex idea, sometimes referred to as waking up," or recovering from" the illusion.

The illusion again simplifying is the illusion of separation, of being something or someone distinct from, separate from, everything else that we see and experience. Remember, Easterners see reality as being one universal entity out of which everything emerges.

We are born into the illusion, and the search is to recover what we always knew: our true nature as an integral part of the universal consciousness. We already knew it... we're trying to remember!

So... how does that relate to golf?

I would maintain that in a very similar way we already know what we need to know about golf. We simply forget... or we refuse to acknowledge the facts that are there, right in front of us.

How can I say that? How can I suggest that a 20-handicapper knows? Isn't golf this terribly difficult and subtle game? Isn't it beyond most of us... at least beyond our ability to excel?

That would certainly seem to be the case. Statistics year after year show that 90% of us have handicaps over 10, and a whopping 60% are over 18. The numbers don't lie... clearly we don't know. Or is really that we don't remember? That we don't act on what we know?
I maintain the latter, and here's why...

Golf is not a hand-eye coordination game. Games where the ball and/or the player are moving tennis, baseball, ping-pong, etc. are hand-eye games. Golf, on the other hand, is a repetition game: the ability to repeat a specific motion, reliably and under pressure.

Said even more strongly, golf is not a skill game. After all, it doesn't take any great skill to hold the club correctly, to stand up to the ball with correct posture and alignment. All it takes is paying attention, paying attention to what we already know (as anyone who has played for any time at all has read or been told the basic fundamentals). Further, if we know how to hold the club and stand up to the ball, is it a difficult and illusive task to move smoothly to the top-of-the-backswing position? Given that one doesn't have a physical handicap of some type, the answer is obviously a resounding no." It's inescapable... we must obviously choose not to do so.

Here's the most obvious example. We all know that balance is part of the game; that being able to swing to a balanced finish position on our front (leading) leg is a fundamental. If we open our eyes at all, we see that every skilled player 100% does that every single swing.

But go to any golf course or driving range and watch. True to the single-digit statistic quoted above, you'll see that 90% of us don't hold a balanced finish, and most of us are falling backwards. How do we expect to move the ball forward when we're falling back?

The conclusions are inescapable: the fundamentals of golf are right in front of us; the skills required are well within most or all of us. We know, but we don't do. We forget to remember! Worse, we choose to forget.

That’s what most golf tips emphasize. In match play, where your opponent is and what his or her score is dictates putting strategy.
If your opponent is lying 3 and is five inches from the hole, chances are he or she is going to sink the putt for a 4. If you’re lying 3, you need to sink the putt to tie your opponent for the hole, so you might as well be aggressive with it.
On the other hand, if your opponent is lying 3 and is twenty feet from the hole, you might as well play that downhill putt more conservatively, if you are also laying 3. You don’t want to run the ball 10 feet past the hole. It could cost you an additional stroke or two and, quite possibly, the hole. Always know where your opponent is on the green and what he or she is shootingbefore deciding on your putting strategy.

“I’ve never been able to just concentrate on golf, so I’ve got a couple of months to focus on it. I’d usually get away in the pre-season, but I’ve known this is coming up so I’ll be sticking around and hitting the golf course. I need to put the practice in to make sure I’m competitive.”It’ll be good to experience it and see how those guys treat it and how they prepare and get around the golf course.
“It’s a totally different field for me and it’ll be a totally different experience.”While Anasta has fantasised about a similar career change when he eventually hangs up his football boots, he knows it would mean making a lot of sacrifices.
“It’s probably a little disrespectful to the professionals and getting ahead of myself, because there’s a lot of hard work and you have to prove yourself first. I’d pretty much have to dedicate my whole time to golf to give it a real crack, and at this point I’m probably not able to do that.
“I grew up on a golf course and played with some guys who are doing pretty well for themselves these days, but I ended up getting a contract with Souths and didn’t really play golf for a good 10 years or so.
“But golf’s always been a release for me. You can go out there and relax and have some time to yourself. I love the competitive nature of it and the mental aspect, and just knowing it’s on your shoulders and no-one else’s. It’s very different to rugby league in that wayAnasta plans on practising almost daily in the countdown to the NSW PGA in November.
